Dean, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences

West Virginia University (WVU) seeks a dynamic academic leader to become its next Dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. As the Chief Academic and Administrative Officer of the College, reporting directly to the Provost, the Dean is responsible for the leadership and management of all programs within the College. This individual should possess the leadership skills, organizational abilities, commitment, and energy needed to address the programmatic and technological challenges of the 21st century.

WVU was founded in 1867 as a result of the 1862 Land-Grant Act, otherwise known as the Morrill Act. WVU is proud of its flagship, land-grant University status, and its mission reflects its dedication to serving the state and citizens of West Virginia through access to higher education, research, and comprehensive health sciences. Two divisional campuses, Potomac State College of West Virginia University (PSC) and the West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVUIT), are located in Keyser, WV, and Montgomery, WV, respectively. A third divisional campus is planned in Beckley, WV.

The institution has 15 colleges and schools offering 193 bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional degree programs in agriculture, natural resources, and design; arts and sciences; business and economics; creative arts; dentistry; education and human services; engineering and mineral resources; journalism; law; medicine; nursing; pharmacy; physical activity and sport sciences; public health. Hundreds of distance education and online classes are available.

The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences is the largest College at WVU, providing 60% of all undergraduate instruction. Enrollment includes 6,350 undergraduate and 1,350 graduate students. The College has 415 full-time faculty and 98 classified staff in 23 academic departments, programs, and centers. Areas of emphasis can be broadly defined as the humanities, the natural and mathematical sciences, and the social sciences. The College is a nationally ranked leader in many areas including psychology, forensic and investigative science, public administration, creative writing, and communication studies.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a leadership capacity with faculty, staff, students, and administrators in an environment of shared decision-making and governance
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in fiscal management and strategic planning suitable for a complex organization
  • Demonstrated ability to expand existing successes in the areas of teaching, research, service/outreach, and advancement
  • Capacity and commitment to create relationships between the College, its alumni and stakeholders to advance the goals of the college, including fundraising
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity and social justice
  • Demonstrated understanding of a Land Grant Institution
  • Credentials to qualify for the rank of professor with tenure in a department or discipline within the Eberly College

Additional qualifications include the abilities to foster interdisciplinary and intercollegiate collaboration, build supportive relationships beyond the university and incorporate international and entrepreneurial activities into the fabric of the College’s programs.

SALARY

The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Marketing and Communications Internship (Fall 2015)

The Office of Communications in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences offers web design, media relations and print material design, marketing support, and more. No two days are the same as we help grow the college’s reputation through amazing website designs, sophisticated marketing materials, media relations and brand support.

We are seeking someone who is mature, motivated, passionate, a hard worker, a self-starter, creative, organized and understands public relations and social media. The ideal candidate will be able to manage a task list, prioritize deadlines, learn on the fly, and be creative while maintaining realistic expectations.

The individual will report to the Director of Communications and Marketing.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Interview students, faculty, and administrators in order to compose press releases, web content, recruiting, and other printed materials for the College
• Write articles for Eberly, the College’s bi-annual alumni magazine distributed to over 45,000 people
• Daily posting and engagement on 4-5 social media accounts
• Pull traffic numbers for weekly and monthly social media reports
• Compile and distribute daily press clippings
• Make story pitches to local, regional and national media outlets
• Schedule photographic sessions, appointments, and meetings related to writing assignments
• Attend and report on various college events
• Update the College’s website content using Slate content management system
• Occasional general office tasks (filing, labeling, copies)

Job Qualifications:
• Motivated, self-directed sophomore , junior, or senior at West Virginia University
• Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills
• Excellent grammar
• Professional appearance and demeanor
• Ability to set and meet deadlines
• Knowledge of and proficiency in MLA and AP writing styles
• Knowledge of and proficiency in social media marketing
• Experience with social media publishing tools (Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Socialflow, etc. is desired but not necessary
• Past journalism/publishing experience desired but not necessary
• Ability to interact comfortably and professionally with a broad and diverse group of students, faculty, alumni, and administrators

Hours: 20 hours per week
Salary: Starting at $10 per hour, with opportunities for performance raises
Start Date: Aug. 17

The ideal candidate will be able to manage a task list, prioritize deadlines, learn on the fly, and be creative while maintaining realistic expectations.

The individual will report to the Director of Communications and Marketing.

Candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:
● Creating or updating graphic materials for the departments and programs of the Eberly College utilizing Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
● Creating or updating website content for the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and its departments and programs.
● Updating websites using HTML and CSS.
● Utilizing Google Analytics and Siteimprove.

Candidate must meet the following requirements:
● Demonstrated graphic design ability and creativity
● Demonstrated written communication skills
● Knowledge of integrated marketing principles including audience targeting
● Proficient in Adobe InDesign, DreamWeaver, Photoshop, Illustrator
● Ability to appropriately apply the principles of layout and design
● Proficiency in HTML, CSS, with an understanding of Javascript or Jquery.
● Proficient photography skills for use in print and web
● Understanding of Content Management Systems, and Dynamic Website Content
